Investigators say a 14-year-old boy was hit and killed by a train near his Sam Jones Road home, which is off of Red House Road, on Saturday just after 3pm. Andy Byrd was walking along the tracks when a CSX train turned a corner and struck him. Andy is a student at B. Michael Caudill Middle School this year but is from Wolfe County. He had been living with his grandparents in Richmond this year. Family members say Andy was hard of hearing and that could have possibly played a role in the accident. Investigators think Byrd had his back to the train and didn’t hear it in time. The teen’s friends planned to wear blue and red colors at school today in memory of him. Funeral arrangements are pending but the family plans on having the funeral at Porter and Son Funeral Home in Campton. People’s Bank of Madison County is accepting donations to help with funeral expenses.
